Krsna slava
Family Patron Saints
The krsna slava is Serbia's most distinctive Orthodox tradition. Every Serbian family honors the saint on whose feast day their ancestors were baptized into Christianity. The celebration includes the slavski kolač (consecrated bread), žito (boiled wheat), red wine and a candle.

About the Krsna Slava
UNESCO recognized the krsna slava as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014. The tradition dates to the 13th century when St Sava organized mass baptisms of the Serbian people. Each family's slava is passed from father to son and never changes — it is the family's most important religious celebration, taking precedence even over personal name-days.
